Understanding Caste Discrimination in Diaspora: Building Dialogues and Allyship

The symposium Understanding Caste Discrimination in Diaspora: Building Dialogues and Allyship, held on 3 November 2025 at Deakin Downtown, Melbourne, brings together scholars, community leaders, and activists to examine caste-based exclusion within diasporic contexts. Organised by the Digital Heritage Centre and the Institute of Asia and Pacific Studies (IAPS), University of Nottingham Ningbo China, the event seeks to open meaningful discussion on caste’s social, cultural, and institutional presence in Australia and beyond.

The symposium explores how caste continues to influence social relationships, workplace inclusion, and community structures in migration settings. Through keynotes, plenaries, and panel discussions, participants consider ways to recognise, document, and challenge caste discrimination while building solidarity and allyship across communities.

Supported by academic and community partners including Deakin University’s Asian Media Cultures Society, The Humanism Project, South Asians for Inclusiveness, Periyar Ambedkar Thoughts Circle of Australia, and Hindus for Human Rights – Australia and New Zealand, this gathering aims to strengthen connections between research and public engagement for social equality and dignity for all.
